Featured in the APA Monitor on Psychology: Esports Psychology and the Road Ahead

I was recently featured in the American Psychological Association's Monitor on Psychology, contributing to a piece exploring how psychologists are shaping the world of esports. It was a good opportunity to reflect honestly on where the field currently stands and where it needs to go.

As I mentioned in the piece, the field still feels somewhat like the Wild West. Teams and practitioners are working hard to find the approaches that are most effective, and while the research base is building quickly, there are important questions still to be answered. One I keep returning to is around practice volume: where does quantity begin to tip into diminishing returns, and when does the quality of training matter more than the hours put in? These questions have real implications for player welfare and long-term performance.

What I find genuinely encouraging is the foundation being laid right now. Initiatives like the Movember Project, which is currently developing the first international mental health guidelines for esports, and EPPIC, a school-based curriculum embedding sport psychology into esports programmes across New Jersey, are raising standards at every level of the game. The next generation of psychologists coming through will have considerably more to build on than those of us who entered the field earlier.
